The Wonderful Flying Machines are an honest band with a desire to make honest music. They draw their influences from an eclectic variety of sources – from the spacey pop of the Flaming Lips, and the virtuoso jazz drumming of Buddy Rich, to the crunch and feel of the Pixies - and mash it all up into something that is both unique and familiar. The core of the songs are Nick Hajek’s tight, distinctive beats over which John Zahnen lets rip with a guitar style that is somewhere between Jimmy Hendrix and Jack White. Philip Golucki lays down the bottom end with tight, catchy bass lines that hold everything together.
The foundations of the band were laid in Ohio, where John and Nick played with a revolving door of musicians during college. After leaving and moving to Chicago, they tried to start a new musical project, but were unable to find a suitable bass player. On accident, they found Phil –he had originally auditioned for the band as a rhythm guitarist. Very quickly, they developed a tight, defined sound that has landed them gigs all around Chicago. In only their first year, they’ve played everything from the Mutiny to the Subterranean. Their unique sound and high energy performances have been stealing the show at every venue they’ve played at.
